“Say hello to my little friends…”
I’ve just completed a set of emoticons that more closely follow our visual identity to replace the defaults on the Canonical Design Blog. The old ones grated rather badly in my opinion and stuck out as something that needed attention. We are still determining exactly what colours we intend to use them in and where but I thought they would be a nice thing to share with everyone. Enjoy :D

I’ve seen these for a short while in use on the OMG! Ubuntu forums, but they are using the larger icons (last I checked).
To me, the smaller (in-line) emoticon in the post is somewhat difficult on the eyes when compared to tradition emoticons which are usually black on yellow.
I do like the simplicity, but the colors strain my eyes a bit in the smaller versions.
Love to see these on a t-shirt. ;)

If you want these for a pidgin theme, follow these easy instructions:
1) Make sure you have pidgin-themes installed
2) Download this
http://people.canonical.com/~robbiew/smileys/Pidgin_Ubuntu_smileys.tgz
3) Save the `ubuntu` directory under /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/emotes as root
4) Then select the theme from under Preferences
If you want to modify the theme, just edit /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/emotes/ubuntu/theme
You can also put this ubuntu directory in ~/.purple/smileys.

You don’t actually need pidgin-themes installed, the instructions can be WAY easier:
1) Select the ‘Themes’ tab from Pidgin -> Tools -> Preferences
2) Drag the link (http://people.canonical.com/~robbiew/smileys/Pidgin_Ubuntu_smileys.tgz) into the ‘Smiley Theme’ drop-down, then select the newly added item!
So how would one incorporate these into gwibber/empathy?
You should incorporate them in Ubuntu : the smiley in Sound Preferences > Hardware tab > Test speakers is not appropriate
…or use the same icon than in About me panel

Just go to System Settings>>>Appearance of applications (Appearance if you use 4.4 or earlier)>>>Emoticons and click on Get New Emoticons or just download the tar.gz and click on Install there.

What was missing from Inkscape that these had to be made using Illustrator?
I can totally understand using proprietary tools where no Free software equivalents exist (or they’re flawed) but Inkscape is an excellent vector editor!

What does empathy have over pidgin?
All I know is empathy doesn’t support nudges, it dosnt support custom smileys, or smiley themes, theres no custom fonts, and theres no control bar above the text. IF empathy implimented these features it would be much better than pidgin, but as it stands its like a skeleton :/ :s
