First of all a big thank you to everyone who submitted a wallpaper to our collection for the Oneiric release and to all our previous selected contributors who went through the images and selected the fine selection for this release! We had almost 2000 submissions this cycle and managed to whittle that down to 45 shortlisted pictures. We will aim to get as many as we can into the final release.
I’ve attached the images to a bug in launchpad which is how the images will get into the release and we’ll keep an eye on this listing until release day on the 13th October to make sure everything’s in place.
With so many images it’s not surprising that our shortlisters couldn’t pick out every great image so I’ve been through and made a gallery of my favourites and would encourage everyone to do the same and let the creators of this content know how much you appreciate their effort!
Thanks again and I look forward to seeing what we create next time around!

Why you don’t use one of them as a default wallpaper in Ubuntu ? The current default wallpaper isn’t appealing.
If the ones shown on here to be selected, I am not impressed. Yes, they are very good but they all are but I think some of the ones such as Mount Snowdon and the railway station (Dybb Isbro) should at least be included. Who wants to see a road- most a proablably sick of them if they commute and get stuck in traffic jams.
Ben: only six-months until we do it all again, and with a fresh competition. Would you like to get more involved and help the judges (previous competition winner) with their choices?
It’s really useful to have this kind of input during the selection process!
Seb24: The idea is that the design slowly evolves over a two-year LTS cycle. Otto Greenslade, the Visual Design Lead for Ubuntu covers some of the background in his upload for the new wallpaper:
Yes it’s a good idea, but i’m not convinced about the result :D or about the original wallpaper used for the incremental change.
The current wallpaper has too much color. I think that we need a wallpaper more “neutral”, matching the new “Unity” style with the Blur effect and transparency effect and according with the radiance and ambiance theme.
The default wallpaper is part of the “wow” effect when a new comer boot the computer. And It’s more important now, because we have an interface less intrusive and more transparent.
I see a really fantastic job from the Design Team and the community ( Font, Theme, Unity, etc.) but for each release it’s missing a really awesome wallpaper. it’s a bit frustrating :D .
great post keep up the great work.
