Normally the Ubuntu/Canonical Design Team are busy working on our own projects, but it makes a really good change to work on other Free Software design problems for a change. Starting at 22:00 UTC (15:00 PDT) on Monday 7 May 2012, you can join us for the next Ubuntu Design Theatre at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Oakland, California:
Bring your design issues along and lets see how we can improve them! There should be visual designers, user interface designers, brand designers, … and the many other people who try and work to make users’ lives better with Free Software.
Here some (design) feedback from myself as a humble user, mainly on Lubuntu/LXDE, but possibly also applicable for other ubuntu flavours:
- LXDE is really a great environment -not only- for netbooks. The artwork on Lubuntu 11.10 is absolutely fantastic, the one on 12.04 not quite (see task bar). Only minor adjustments had to be done for my 1024*600 screen, e.g. font- and icon sizes.
- I copied the dark metallic LXPanel default background pic to 12.04 and adjusted font- and icon colours. However, the taskbar does not pick up the white font settings (coded in css ?). The LXPanel itself, contrastingly, picks it up as it should.
- It would be nice to be able to switch tasks via Alt-Tab. Within a given workspace that of course works. Is it, therefore, viable to also have the [workspacenumber] in brackets, i.e. the ones that run on other workspaces, in order to switch to running tasks on these other workspaces ?
- Long live synaptic ! Likewise, PCMan and LXRandR rule !
- With some applications I have to scroll down a bit (on small screens like mine) to reach the ‘save’ button, which of course is no canonical issue.
- Is it true that (Adobe) ‘flash’ will stop to be supported on Linux/ Firefox ?

Secoundly, XfBurn or K3B could have a sound feature for audio CD creation, like ‘Winoncd’ had it back in the 90s, when I was using it. Reason: I have loads of sound snippets -in all possible dynamics. Back then, a little audio editor was included, where the loudness could be adjusted manually without recoding the original material. The automated approach of K3B does not work for me here. issue a native ‘Excel_2010_L’ version.
