Still Andrea Cimitan, still good news for you :)
This is a small blog post to list few of the changes we did to light-themes:
- Menuitem speedup, hurray!!! :D
- Subtle shadow on inactive notebook’s tabs
- White text color on GtkProgressBar
- Increased visibility of the resize gripper
- Fixed contrast applied to elements in GtkStatusbar
- More compatibility with custom color specified in Appearance Preferences
- Increased contrast between text and background
- Tweaks to the odd row color inside GtkTreeView
I really hope to see the updated packages in maverick soon.
As always, we appreciate your feedback. It’s important keeping the good communication we are establishing with you: if you notice, some of the changes came from your precious comments ;)
See you soon guys, and enjoy your weekend!
Well done Andrea, keep up with the good work! (ciaparat! :D)
ahahah :D
Nice work dude :P
Nice Job Andrè!
Really excited to try this soon!
troppo spacchioso! ;)
Great work dude!
Thanks for the update. Are scrollbars not being restored to normal size then?
@ssound: not yet, we are still not sure about that change, cause it has both advantages and downsides.
Menuitems are still slow for me (my computer is not that fast, though). The strange thing is that qt applications like vlc are fast, and they render the glowish effect just like gtk applications.
Firefox menuitems are even slower.
@Hito:
You need to wait for an updated version of gtk2-engines-murrine, it’s not packaged yet. (as you can see here https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk2-engines-murrine)
Will there still come some updates to the metacity-buttons or some changes to color and more effects or is this the final-look and you will fix now the bugs only? thanks for this theme
@django: I think that usability changes are the only changes in the look which could obtain a UIF exception
That’s great news. Btw, I haven’t seen a screenshot. Could u post one?
and how about the bars on the bottom and top of the screen (taskbar), can we now make it transparent or bigger as we can with the old themes?
Good job!
You should have posted a screenshot, but anyway, there is just one thing that I would consider a regression compared to Lucid and that is that the window title bar doesn’t blend with the menu bar and the background of the Ubuntu installer, will there be a fix for that?
Thanks!
If you’re still taking suggestions:
Is there a way to make the twisty (spinner, expander) widget larger? That *tiny* little triangle is really hard to hit on a screen that actually has decent DPI.
Clearlooks’ spinners are far easier to use, I like that size.
Great job, thanks :).
(I demand if this issue will be ever fixed by default http://bit.ly/aOEQgk )
for the guys wondering about the issue with big and/or transparent panels: unfortunately, with the current gnome-panel, we can’t set both a pixmap and make it work with different sizes and/or make it transparent. So, since we like the gradient on the panel, we have to live with that issue for the moment. Let’s hope for better handling of these issues in gnome 3.0 or future releases!
Sorry to repost, but it seems more likely this will be answered in this post than my last. Hope someone can help me out with this one:
I’m trying to do some editing of the dust theme, in hopes a change or two can get slipped in before the proper release… the biggest issue is the arrows to the left of any file tree (such as in a player like clementine, or the bookmarks sidebar of firefox). Ambiance uses very sleek arrows, while dust… well, honestly, they’re almost comically large. I think perhaps the value to set these is in the metacity-theme-1.xml file, as making dust use ambiance’s metacity shrinks the arrows (along with a few more humorous changes). Is there any chance someone (dev or otherwise) could clue me in to what value I’d need to change/add in this file to use the nicer arrow buttons? Thanks so much in advance, and great work on the default theme(s)!
Don’t change the scrollbar pls. I love the way it is now.
It would be good when some aubergine would be in the theme. At least the link-color.
The orange of the buttons is not the same orange you can see in the progressbar. Could you fix this?
I guess that replacing dark brown in titlebar/menu with the color of window could make every window (application) much more “light” as in brand definition. :-)
And please!!!! MORE contrast to the scrollbars. They are still difficult to see when working at night. Please see the contrast here: http://ebupof.deviantart.com/art/Fundamental-Round-2-178964808
It is really important to make the scrollbar more visible.
And the metacity-buttons are still difficult to see too. Especially in the radiance-theme. Please more contrast here too.
I agree with mastig, the them definitely lacks contrast everywhere. The buttons, scrollbars, etc…
updated to the latest murrine version (bzr) but menus are still slow for me (better than the second update, but still slow).
Two problems here :
1. In Firefox the selected menu item has white color (in all other applications it’s black). See http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2554438/white-menu.png
2. When tabs are used vertically, the shadow is incorrect (the source of light in Ubuntu desktop is on the top). See http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2554438/tab-shadow.png
Hi Andrea, when will you adjust this http://twitpic.com/2pkk46#? Because if you aren’t so near to screen it’s really hard to read…Thanks for all :)
Menuitems are indeed a bit slow, but it can be easily solved.
Just open the gtrk file and find this:
style “menu” = “dark” {
xthickness = 0
ythickness = 0
bg[NORMAL] = “#43423f”
bg[INSENSITIVE] = “#43423f”
fg[INSENSITIVE] = shade (0.7, “#43423f”)
engine “murrine”
{
roundness = 0
}
}
style “menu_item” = “menu” {
xthickness = 2
ythickness = 3
fg[PRELIGHT] = @selected_fg_color
engine “murrine”
{
glowstyle = 5
glow_shade = 1.1
border_shades = {0.95, 0.85}
}
}
and replace it with this:
style “menu” = “dark” {
xthickness = 0
ythickness = 0
bg[NORMAL] = “#43423f”
bg[INSENSITIVE] = “#43423f”
fg[INSENSITIVE] = shade (0.7, “#43423f”)
engine “clearlooks”
{
radius = 0.0
}
}
style “menu_item” = “menu” {
xthickness = 2
ythickness = 3
fg[PRELIGHT] = @selected_fg_color
engine “murrine”
{
glowstyle = 5
glow_shade = 1.1
border_shades = {0.95, 0.85}
roundness = 0
}
}
and now your menuitems will be really fast and comftable to use :)

Hi, I am a developer of OpenFetion, and I just find this bug:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/light-themes/+bug/645952/
Please have a look, thanks a lot!
Hi, sorry to cross-post … I first commented on an older entry:
The theme looks really great!
One little thing i find really annoying: The space between the scrollbar and the element the scrollbar controls. I find that hugely distracting, that this space exists. I certainly prefer a “more coupled” style, so I can actually know which element belongs to the scrollbar.
Somehow this is fixed in some themes, but it still comes up from time to time and I have to hack the gtkrc myself.
If there are concerns about the look when the scrollbar directly touches the thing it controlls, i would suggest only rounding the steppers on the side _not_ touching the other element.
I made a quick hack in GIMP to show what I would really prefer: imgur.com/ZqYJJ
Hello,
I have question, but dont know where to ask so i ask here. It is possible to have in dark Ambiance theme, light Radiance style menus? I mean everything will be dark, incl. gnome panel, but menus will be light. Because i dont like dark menus, but rest of the theme is beautiful. Thanks for answer..
