Almost all of the design team are in Orlando this week taking part in UDS. As well as getting ready for the summit in the last few weeks we’ve also been working on something we’re really excited about. You may have already seen this video we’ve commissioned which explains a little bit about what Ubuntu is. It was made for use by some partners of ours in promoting open source and in particular our favourite distro. As well as the video we’ve also produced an HTML5 based framework which will play the video on a loop. Not only does this play video but it can display anything you tell it to. Create some images or videos, edit the HTML and you can easily create a simple rolling demo with lovely transitions.
This is obviously great for us and events that Canonical goes to but we’ve also already open sourced this and put the project on Launchpad so that loco teams and other groups can use it.
We think this could be a really handy promotional tool so we’re really excited to share it with you and see what people try to add to the framework that accompanies the video. The animation is silent as it’s designed to be shown on a screen in a busy and noisy environment but the assets you choose to put in there could include sound, more images, all sorts of things!
What is Ubuntu? from Canonical Design on Vimeo.
We look forward to seeing how you guys take this forward!
What is the licensing terms on that video at vimeo?
-jef
It’s currently set to Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs
cool one :D may be because I am on chromium OS … I couldnt hear anything there ?
There is this movie on youtube with sound from game of sony corp. :)
Is there a way to download this? The flash don’t work full screen for me. I have 10.2 flash but no go.
Just for clarity does Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs mean that making a version with an alternative audio track is disallowed without seeking out additional licensing terms?
The vimeo video above doesn’t have audio. The Youtube video posted on omgubuntu does. Is the youtube video then in violation of the -NoDerivs clause?
-jef
There is an HTML5 version of the vimeo page which should work or you can download the file from the same page.
Nope, your system is working perfectly, there’s no sound with the movie. We may add one at a later date but as I said it was designed to play in a large hall so sound would have been drowned out.
Somehow the end looks like a semi-goatse.
Hi, what about translations?
Is there a plan for it? I think that Ubuntu traslation or LoCo teams would take care of it, if they are allowed. :-)
Hi,
That’s great!
Just why ubuntu.com isn’t mentioned? Also, “open”, “open source” shouldn’t mean much for usual people, also, in my opinion, mentioning “Linux” in the ad isn’t very good, because many people think it is not for usual work, it’s more for programmers.
The biggest problem for all Linux distributions is, in my opinion, that most people even don’t imagine what “operating system” means. So you should try to get Ubuntu sold with as many computers as possible.
When there will be more Ubuntu users, maybe such companies as Adobe would make their products available for Linux. You (Canonical) could also try to talk with Adobe for making their PS, Lightroom available for Linux. Because there aren’t any equal products to Adobe’s for photographers in Linux. I know, that it would be much more Ubuntu users, if they could use Photoshop and Lightroom (as well as software for video, audio editing etc.) in Ubuntu. I’m a photographer, and I have to use Windows for editing photos and Ubuntu for other activities. I need to restart the computer some times a day and that’s very annoying.
Another thing you could do for making Ubuntu more popular is better defaults. It’s extremely important, because it’s the first impression (especially important when trying Ubuntu from CD). That are my recommendations:
1. Radiance theme instead of ambiance (I’ve noticed that most usual people prefer light colors in their computers). I also use radiance theme
2. Smaller font. Take a look at Windows or Mac. The fonts are smaller. Now Ubuntu has a superb font but one of the main things to so after installation is decreasing font size.
One more thing: when you’re advertising Ubuntu on your website, don’t show the bug in the sound menu. Be smart ;)
I hope this my post will help you a bit.
Sorry for my English.
Good luck!
Thanks for your comments Tadas.
Just to reiterate the reason that it doesn’t mention the website is because this was specifically made to show to some business decision makers to give them a brief high level introduction to Ubuntu and to get them to pick up a CD from the table next to the screen.
We could look to make updates to it in future to make it more widely usable, or this could inspire new creations that speak to a specific need.
Nice video! Is this After Effects or Flash animation?
Congrats
I mostly agree with you.
1.Radiance/Ambiance, doesn’t matter what is default. All these themes are very nice. But I prefer Ambiance.
2.The Ubuntu font is awesome. Even so you are right, the size should be smaller.
Are there any efforts from Canonical to make Adobe (or other companies) more interested in Linux/Ubuntu?
BTW, the advert is pretty nice. Thanks for it.
I forgot to mention that is a really great video! ;-)
Where I can find movie with sound ?
I love this video, especially with the LittleBigPlanet music use at UDS.
I want to raise a point: Why just “Ubuntu runs on desktops”? Joe normal would say “So it doesn’t run on my laptop, tablet, netbook, etc”
I know the video is going to be played at Canonical events and things like that but, it will fly around the internet and many non Linux users could get confused if they see the video only mentioning desktops.
looks pretty cheap to me. I’ve seen much better before. Bouncing logos and zoom and fade effects are so yesterday
I support Sergio in this request. The video is really simple to understand, but localization is a value for Ubuntu.
However I suppose it’s not so simple translate it and respect available space, text layout, bold and so on…
Nice work!
What tool did you use?
John
To stay in line with ‘Open’ I would advise you to go with CC-BY(-SA)
Why use vimeo? Doesn’t Canonical/Ubuntu have its own servers? Why not put it on http://www.ubuntu.com?
I have to disagree. It’s a simple highlight reel that gets the job done. Agreed on the comments about wording and what could have been said rather, but I think people are over-looking the fact that this is a great base to work off from, as well as the fact that it wasn’t meant for “commercial” purposes. As the time tested saying goes… Keep it simple.
love the video, simple and sweet :)
great job design team !
translations will be useful indeed.
Do not use proprietary software, is simple.
Use GIMP, Inkscape, MyPaint, Synfig, Scribus, Blender, Audacity, Ardour, Cinelerra, Kdenlive, OpenShot…
;)
I’ll repost my critic here so hopefully I can get some feedback :)
Some problems I found:
– “and an internationally active developer community” doesn’t stay on long enough
– the fact that Ubuntu is “Safe” and then “Open” doesn’t really make sense unless you know the context in which ‘open’ is actually ‘open source’. Might be confusing to laymens
– Ubuntu runs in the cloud only pertains to enterprise users. This will also be confusing to laymens.
– No music, narrative or sound effects?
– the Canonical text ‘specialist tools’ doesn’t make much sense to laymens either…. “Providers of expert services, specialist tools and consulting services”
– the hand at the end I feel is out of place with the animation
– I feel the animation should fade to the Ubuntu logo at the end
Other than that, what a fantastic job on the animation!
Bwahaha, it’s true. For a second while I saw that part I thought: “Ooh, something about that is a bit *wrong*” without consciously realizing what it was.
Very nice promo, though. Put it under a real CC license, not this closed cr*p. I mean, what is the point? You want to prevent people from giving you free ad time?
I like this video and would also know which open source software can do it?
Why we could not see this video in a free codec (Theora or WebM)? With a live CD, we haven’t flash or mp4 codec (otherwise Ubuntu could not be free).
The video in theora codec:

Theora is going out of style since webm is a successor to it really.
una versión en español seria muy útil!
It’s a pity that we cannot know with what tool this nice movie was done. We never got any answer from all websites talking about it :(
This is a cool blog message, I will keep this idea in my mind. If you add more video and pictures because it helps understanding :) ml Rio de Janeiro.
We did do an ogg version too which is hosted in our examples section on the design blog.
Hardy heron, Karmic Koala, Lucid Lynx can’t read webm because webm was born in 19/06/2010.
@ Iain Farrell:
Why you don’t write this link in your first message?
Hello everybody, I’m French and I contribute to the translation project. We are very interested in this video, I would like to know if it’s possible to get the sources. This video in French could be very cool!
Thank you a lot.

still nobody here to answer? :(
